On March 10, the Wellness Space at the Vulcan Community Health Centre became a place of honest conversation, learning, and connection as community members gathered for two meaningful presentations led by Gerry Friesen, “The Recovering Farmer,” and his wife, Rose.
Through their lived experience and deep understanding of rural life, Gerry and Rose shared powerful insights into the realities of stress, resilience, and mental well-being within agricultural families. The afternoon workshop, Stressful Encounters: A Mental Wellbeing Workshop, focused on supporting agricultural professionals who often find themselves on the front lines of difficult conversations with farmers and producers. The evening session, A Tale of Two Brains, opened the door for ag families and community members to hear Gerry’s personal journey and practical strategies for navigating the pressures of modern farming.
Their openness, honesty, and willingness to share both challenges and hope created a space where people felt comfortable reflecting, learning, and supporting one another.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to Gerry and Rose Friesen for travelling to Vulcan County and for giving so generously of their time and personal story. Their message reminds us that looking out for one another is one of the greatest strengths of rural communities.
We would also like to thank everyone who attended these sessions. Your willingness to take time out of busy days and demanding seasons to learn, listen, and support the well-being of our agricultural community speaks volumes about the care we have for one another here in Vulcan County.
This learning opportunity was made possible through the collaborative efforts of the Vulcan County Mental Wellness Coalition, together with community partners who continue to work to ensure that conversations around mental well-being remain strong, supportive, and rooted in our community.
Because when we support the well-being of our farmers and agricultural families, we are truly looking out for our own.
