Expansion & Renovation
Project Goal
The expansion and renovation of the Vulcan Community Health Centre were designed to ensure the facility continues to serve the residents of Vulcan County effectively for the next 25 years.
This project improves access to primary health care services, strengthens service integration within the Health Centre, and supports the community’s ability to attract and retain physicians and other health professionals in our rural region.
Background
Since its establishment in 2011, the Vulcan County Health & Wellness Foundation (VCHWF) has worked closely with community partners to support the long-term sustainability of health services in Vulcan County.
In 2015, Alberta Health Services approved an agreement that allowed the Foundation, in partnership with the Town of Vulcan and Vulcan County, to raise funds for an 800-square-metre expansion of the Vulcan Community Health Centre.
The redevelopment maintains the integrated model that connects the hospital, emergency department, and medical clinic, ensuring efficient patient care and collaboration between healthcare teams.
Project Overview
Phase 1 – Construction of the New Wing
Completed October 2020
The new wing added approximately 800 square metres of modern healthcare space and includes:
- A 520 square metre Medical Clinic with space to accommodate up to 8 full-time physicians
- Improved clinical workflow and examination rooms to increase patient access to family physicians
- Rehabilitation Services relocated from the basement to the main floor
- Adult Day Support Program relocated to a more accessible space
- A multi-purpose wellness and education space designed to support community health programs, meetings, and healthcare education opportunities locally
These improvements allow residents to access more services close to home, reducing the need to travel outside the community for care and education.
Phase 2 – Health Centre Renovations
Currently underway
Renovations within the existing Health Centre will improve efficiency and patient experience, including:
- Expanded laboratory space to improve workflow and service delivery
- Renovation of the Emergency Department medication area
- Creation of a more private and dedicated Mental Health space
- Relocation and redesign of the Palliative Care Suite adjacent to the nursing station to better support patients, families, and visitors
Planning and fundraising efforts continue to support the ongoing renovation of the palliative care suite.
Looking Forward
Through strong collaboration between community partners and generous donor support, the expansion and renovations of the Vulcan Community Health Centre ensure our facility remains capable of meeting the healthcare needs of Vulcan County residents today and into the future.
